SUMMARY: In this fragment, Tzetzes quotes The Iliad, which says that Demeter winnows the grain by using the winds.

“For I find that he . . . (v. fr. 257) therefore:

“The wheat and ears of grain are shut up on the threshing-floors

of the winnowing men, while fair-haired Dîmítîr (Δημήτηρ)

separates the fruit from the chaff by hastening the winds.”

(trans. by the author)

*Translator’s note: These three lines are verses 499-501 of book 5 of The Iliad, except that the first line is different (but for the last two words). Line 499 of The Iliad is ὡς δ᾽ ἄνεμος ἄχνας φορέει ἱερὰς κατ᾽ ἀλωὰς, otherwise these are the exact same lines. Therefore, I assume that Tzetzes was using an alternate text of Homer.

Herm. Orph. 511 n. 33; Christian Lobeck Aglaophamus I 423; Josef Heeg 30 fr. 15.
