SUMMARY: This testimony, from the Christian deacon Procopius, says that the doctrine of Orpheus is false and useless.

ORPHIC CRITICAL TESTIMONY 157

Encomium (“Eulogy”) by Procopius the Deacon on Mark the evangelist 5 (Jacque Paul Migne Patrologia Graeca 100, 1192):

“Orphéfs (Ὀρφεὺς), while entirely charming the wild beasts with his voice, did not persuade his neighboring Thracians. And indeed, flowing with much talk and haughty with an empty wisdom, they corrupted themselves with intoxication, and sunk into depths of silence: for such as this is false and useless doctrine.”
