173. (310) Fabius Planciades Fulgentius Mitologiarum libri III 9 p. 74, 8 Helm ~ Myth. Vat. III 10, 7 (Raschke De Alberico myth. 103):

nunc ergo huius misticae fabulae (sc. Apollinis et Marsyae) interiorem cerebrum inquiramus. a musicis haec reperta est fabula, ut Orfeus in teogonia scribit; musici enim duos artis suae posuerunt ordines, tertium vero quasi ex necessitate adicientes, ut Ermes Trismegistus ait, id est: adomenon, psallomenon, aulumenon, hoc est: aut cantantium aut citharidiantium aut tibizantium.

“Now therefore, we should search for the inner understanding of this mystic narrative (that is, of Apóllôn and Marsýas). This tale was invented by musicians, as Orpheus writes in his Theogonia; the musicians indeed set down two orders for their skill, but from necessity, increasing it to a third, just as Hermes Trismegistus affirms: singing, playing the harp, playing the flute, that is: either those producing melodies or playing the cithara, or those playing the flute.”
