SIMULACRA (Statues; v. nrr. 1. 78. 107)

SUMMARY: This testimony, an inscription found in the foothills of Mt. Haemus, says that a statue of Orpheus was set up in that place.

Inscription of the second or third century B.C.E. discovered on the foothills of Mt. Haemus Bulletin de Correspondance Hellénique II 1878, 401 (Georg Kaibel Rheinischen Museum XXXIV 1879, 212; Rudolf Schöell Satura philologica, brought forward by Hermann Sauppe 180).:

Τήρη<ς> Πα<ί>ων <ὧδε τὸν> Ἀπόλλωνος ἑταῖρον

Ὀρφέα δαιδαλέης θῆκεν ἄγαλμα τέχνης·

ὃς θῆρας καὶ δένδρα καὶ ἑρπετὰ καὶ πετεηνὰ

φωνῆι καὶ χειρῶν κοίμησεν ἁρμονίηι.

“Here, Tírîs (Τήρης) the Paionian, the companion of Apóllôn, dedicated a statue of wonderfully crafted skill to Orphéfs (Ὀρφεύς); who calmed the wild beasts, the trees, the snakes, and the birds, subduing them with voice and music.”
