ORPHIC CRITICAL TESTIMONY 261

Στεφάνος Αλεξανδρέως Περὶ χρυσοποιΐας σὺν θεῶι πρᾶξις δευτέρα (Second discourse on making gold [alchemy] with the help of God) Physici et medici Graeci minores ed. Christian Ludwig Ideler II 203, 11:

Ὀρφέα γάρ φησι λιχανὸν τοῖς (Wilamowitz kindly provided, after which he himself concluded λιχανοὺς; ληχάνοντες C. L. Ideler) ῥυθμικοῖς ἐνηρμόσθαι φθόγγοις, ὥστε καὶ τῆς ὁμοταγοῦς οὐσιῶν κινήσεως ἡ συμφωνία ὑπηχῆται, καὶ τὴν ἄιδουσαν ἐμμελῶς ἐκτελεῖ μελωδίαν.

“For he says that Orphéfs (Ὀρφεύς) adapted finger-strumming to the rhythmic sounds, and so the harmony of the coordinated dance of essences sounded in answer, and harmoniously achieved a singing melody.”
