SUMMARY: This testimony shows that Orpheus was with Jason and his son Euneus, which means that he must have been one of the Argonauts.

Ὑψιπύλη Εὐριπίδου τμῆμα 64 col. 2 v. 35 ss. (de Arnim 66):
Εὔνεως· Ἀργώ με καὶ τόνδ’ ἤγαγ’ εἰς Κόλχων πόλιν.
Ὑψιπύλη· ἀπομαστίδιόν γ᾿ ἐμῶν στέρνων.
Εὔνεως· ἐπεὶ δ᾿ Ἰάσων ἔθαν᾿ ἐμός, μῆτερ, πατήρ—
Ὑψιπύλη· οἴμοι κακ<ὰ> λέγεις δάκρυά τ᾿ ὄμμασιν,
τέκνον, ἐμοῖς δίδως.
Εὔνεως· Ὀρφεύς με καὶ τόνδ᾿ ἤγαγ᾿ εἰς Θρήικης τόπον. 40
Ὑψιπύλη· τίνα πατέρι ποτὲ χάριν ἀθλίωι
τιθέμενος; ἔνεπέ μοι, τέκνον.
Εὔνεως· μοῦσάν με κιθάρας Ἀσιάδος διδάσκεται·
τοῦτ<ο>ν δ᾿ ἐς Ἄρεως ὅπλ᾿ ἐκόσμησεν μάχης.
“Évnæôs (Εὔνεως): The Argóh (Ἀργώ) took me and him to the city of the Kolkians.
Ypsipýlî (Ὑψιπύλη): Indeed, you a suckling from my breasts.
Évnæôs: And when my father Iásôn (Ἰάσων) died, mother—
Ypsipýlî: Ah me! You speak of evils and give tears to my eyes, son!
Évnæôs: Orphéfs (Ὀρφεύς) took me and him to the region of Thrace.
Ypsipýlî: Giving what favour to your pitiful father? Tell me, son!
Évnæôs: He taught me the music of the Asian kithára; and he prepared for him the battle-weapons of Ares.”
