SUMMARY: This testimony shows that Orpheus was with Jason and his son Euneus, which means that he must have been one of the Argonauts.

ORPHIC CRITICAL TESTIMONY 79.

Ὑψιπύλη Εὐριπίδου τμῆμα 64 col. 2 v. 35 ss. (de Arnim 66):

Εὔνεως· Ἀργώ με καὶ τόνδ’ ἤγαγ’ εἰς Κόλχων πόλιν.

Ὑψιπύλη· ἀπομαστίδιόν γ᾿ ἐμῶν στέρνων.

Εὔνεως· ἐπεὶ δ᾿ Ἰάσων ἔθαν᾿ ἐμός, μῆτερ, πατήρ—

Ὑψιπύλη· οἴμοι κακ<ὰ> λέγεις δάκρυά τ᾿ ὄμμασιν,

τέκνον, ἐμοῖς δίδως.

Εὔνεως· Ὀρφεύς με καὶ τόνδ᾿ ἤγαγ᾿ εἰς Θρήικης τόπον. 40

Ὑψιπύλη· τίνα πατέρι ποτὲ χάριν ἀθλίωι

τιθέμενος; ἔνεπέ μοι, τέκνον.

Εὔνεως· μοῦσάν με κιθάρας Ἀσιάδος διδάσκεται·

τοῦτ<ο>ν δ᾿ ἐς Ἄρεως ὅπλ᾿ ἐκόσμησεν μάχης.

“Évnæôs (Εὔνεως): The Argóh (Ἀργώ) took me and him to the city of the Kolkians.

Ypsipýlî (Ὑψιπύλη): Indeed, you a suckling from my breasts.

Évnæôs: And when my father Iásôn (Ἰάσων) died, mother—

Ypsipýlî: Ah me! You speak of evils and give tears to my eyes, son!

Évnæôs: Orphéfs (Ὀρφεύς) took me and him to the region of Thrace.

Ypsipýlî: Giving what favour to your pitiful father? Tell me, son!

Évnæôs: He taught me the music of the Asian kithára; and he prepared for him the battle-weapons of Ares.”

This logo is the principal symbol of this website. It is called the CESS logo, i.e. the Children of the Earth and the Starry Sky. The Pætilía (Petelia, Πετηλία) and other golden tablets having this phrase are the inspiration for the symbol. The image represents this idea: Earth (divisible substance) and the Sky (continuous substance) are the two kozmogonic substances. The twelve stars represent the Natural Laws, the dominions of the Olympian Gods. In front of these symbols is the seven-stringed kithára (cithara, κιθάρα), the the lyre of Apóllôn (Apollo, Ἀπόλλων). It (here) represents the bond between Gods and mortals and is representative that we are the children of Orphéfs (Orpheus, Ὀρφεύς).
