SUMMARY: This testimony, from the Christian theologian Theodoret, says that Orpheus learned the secret rites from the Egyptians, brought them to Greece, and with this knowledge created the Dionysia festival.

Ἑλληνικών Θεραπευτική Παθημάτων Θεοδωρήτου τοῦ Κύρρου I 114 p. 31, 24 Raed.:
ταῦτα (phalli cultum) ἐκ τῆς Αἰγύπτου |32 Raed. τὰ ὄργια μαθὼν ὁ Ὀδρύσης Ὀρφεὺς εἰς τὴν Ἑλλάδα μετήνεγκε καὶ τὴν τῶν Διονυσίων ἑορτὴν διεσκεύασεν.
“Having learned these secret rites (the cult of the phallus) from the Egyptians, Odrysian Orphéfs (Ὀδρύσης Ὀρφεὺς) carried them across to Greece and prepared the festival of the Dionýsia (Διονύσια).”
