ORPHIC CRITICAL TESTIMONY 171

ὁρᾶις πῶς Ὀρφεὺς (ὁ Σωκράτης A but with a crossed line he wrote over it with the same hand ὀρφεὺς Couvreur, ὁ Ὀρφεύς Gesn.) (Abel fr. 275)

“For not one divine inspiration occurs without motivation born from love. See how Orphéfs (Ὀρφεὺς) took care disclosing all things as regards to our needing and being near one another? For we have received from him the most mysterious and prophetic teaching. And Orphéfs was moved by Apóllôn (Ἀπόλλων), and as yet, he is the most celebrated among poets; at any rate, for this same reason, they say also that he was born the son of Kalliópî (Καλλιόπη). And he is the most erotic as he is seen speaking to Mousaios and holding out to him divine blessings and initiating him into the Mysteries.”
