SUMMARY: This testimony, from the Parian Chronicle, says that during the reign of Erechtheus at Athens, Orpheus composed his poetry about the abduction of Corë, and the subsequent search for her by Demeter.

<ἀφ’ οὗ Ὀρφεὺς ὁ Οἰάγρου καὶ Καλλιόπης> υἱὸ<ς τ><ν ἑ>αυτοῦ πόησιν ἐξ<έ>θηκε, Κόρης τε ἁρπαγὴν καὶ Δήμητρος ζήτησιν καὶ τὸν αὐτοῦ <εὑρεθέντα ὑπ’ αὐτῆς σπόρον καὶ τὸ πλῆ>θος τῶν ὑποδεξαμένων τὸν καρπόν, ἔτη ΧΗΔΔΔΓ, βασιλεύοντος Ἀθηνῶν Ἐρεχθέως.

“From whom Orphéfs (Ὀρφεύς), the son of Íagros (Οἴαγρος) and Kalliópî (Καλλιόπη), expounded his poetry, of Kórî (Κόρη) and her abduction, and the search (for her) by Dîmítîr (Δημήτηρ), who had by herself invented the sowing of seed, and the great many people having received the fruit of the earth, in the year 1135, during the reign of Ærækhthéfs (Ἐρεχθεύς) at Athens.”
