ORPHIC CRITICAL TESTIMONY 229

Περὶ τῆς εἰς Ὀρφέα <ἀναφερομένης add. Theodor Bergk> ποιήσεως

“On the poetry ascribed to Orpheus”

or Περὶ τῆς Ὀρφέως ποιήσεως

“On the poetry of Orpheus”

These are both attributed to Epigenes, whose treatise is cited in Λόγος Στρώματα Κλήμεντος του Ἀλεξανδρέως I 21 (II 81, 11 Staeh.) and V 8 (II 360, 10 Staeh.) v. nr. 222.

From (Harpocration) Βαλερίου Ἁρποκρατιόνος Περὶ τῶν Λέξεων τῶν Δέκα Ῥητόρων· Ἴων 103, 14 Harpocration et Moeris August Immanuel Bekker:

φιλόσοφόν τι σύγγραμμα τὸν Τριαγμὸν ἐπιγραφόμενον, ὅπερ Καλλίμαχος ἀντιλέγεσθαί φησιν ὡς Ἐπιγένους (ὑπὸ Ἐ. Bergk Griech. Litgesch. I 395 n. 235; ὡς <καὶ> Ἐπιγένης Hermann Diels Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker I3 285, 7; ὡς <ὑπὸ> Ἐπιγένους L. Cohn)

“A philosophical writing which is entitled The Triad (Τριαγμός), the very work which Kallímakhos says is disputed as being by Epiyǽnîs (Ἐπιγένης).”

(trans. by the author)

It cannot be completely resolved whether Epigenes lived before the time of Callimachus.
